Feedback:  Scott Ayton

Thanks to Bradley and Julie who put together a great Fat Tracks race!  The route, lucky draws and company of other Fat Tracks members were great!

For many years the Sub Vets dominated the top placings at Fat Tracks races.  It is great to see that is changing with Jason Meaton leaving a dust trail for all the other riders to follow in the 40km route.  Well done to him on his very good 1st place.  Andrew Briggs chased hard and finished second about 5 min adrift with Charl Joubert  in 3rd spot.  In the ladies category Melanie Darlow finished first, followed by Vicky Laing and Vanessa Lessing.

The 15 km was much shorter but as all events in Longmore there were some good climbing involved.  It was definitely not your average “fun ride type” casual ride!  Well done to the the winners of the 15km.  The male category was 1st Rian Basson; 2nd Ashley Lemmer; 3rd Brian Webb.  The ladies were; 1st Theresa Tunstead;  2nd Chrislie Niehaus; 3rd tied  was Linda Truscott and Kathy van Dyk.

The annual Scott Ayton memorial race comes back to Longmore this year.

Scott Ayton was a keen mountain biker and Fat Tracks member who was tragically killed just after returning home from a mountain bike race in Longmore Forest in 1992.
On behalf of the Ayton family, the Scott Ayton memorial race was established and has been an annual Fat Tracks event for the past 18 years.

You can look forward to a great event with 2 race distances to choose from, a 15km and 40km.
The 15km route is not too difficult - in actual fact, its Klaas' (the Longmore forester) "secret" afternoon MTB route which he has kindly decided to share with us.
The emphasis is on enjoying the magnificent views of the mountains, the Loerie Dam (which is now overflowing), and the sea (if its a clear day).

The start of the 40km follows the same route as the 15km, but branches off after 1km, taking you a little higher up into the mountains for even more spectacular views. The 40km then rejoins the shorter route for the final 12km.

The section of Longmore which we'll be using has never been raced before. It was untouched by the massive fires which destroyed most of the trees a few years ago - in other words, it still has the feel of a "real forest".

Driving Directions:

  • From PE, Take the N2 towards Humansdorp
